Every time you boot your computer alot of "hidden" programs load in the background. Some of these hidden programs are essential, but most aren't. Turning off some of these hidden programs can significantly increase your computer's performance and reliability.
Built into Windows is a special tool called the "Microsoft System Configuration Utility" or simply "MSCONFIG." Designed to help you troubleshoot problems with your computer, MSCONFIG can also be used to ensure that your computer boots faster and crashes less.
Go to Run-> type msconfig A System Configuration Utility will open, Click on the "Startup" tab, Now uncheck all the programs you don't want to run at start up. Now the second part, USB VIRUSES: Well most of the USB Viruses execute automatically whenever you plug it into you PC. This happens because virus creates a replica of the autorun file. In order minimize the impact of USB based viruses we have to disable the autoplay option. Follow these steps to disable autoplay option in XP : 1. Go to Start, then RUN the following command : gpedit.msc 2. In group policy editor select Administrative Templates under Computer Configuration tab. 3. Under Administrative Template select System. On right-side pane you will see option Turn off Autoplay, select it. 4. Right click on it and select Properties. Select Enabled, then Apply and click OK. That's it.Now you wont get any AUTOPLAY option when you plug in your USB drive to PC. This gives you an option to scan USB drive with antivirus everytime you connect USB drive to PC. Thus you can eliminate virus before it invades your computer.
